The ancient vocation of the Sicilian hilly area for the production of wine, already appreciated in the Homeric age, is testified by many authoritative sources.

In this context, in Faro Superiore di Messina, the whole valley in which Vigna Sara is located,   was cultivated with vineyards since at least the 19th century.

The result was a wine known for its good structure and not too high alcohol content. Later almost all the vineyards in the valley were abandoned. Only a few small plots, including Vigna Sara, have survived thanks to the tenacity of the passionate owners who have kept their vines up to the present day.

Faro DOC wine is produced in the hilly areas of the municipal area according to a product specification published, among the first in Sicily, in 1976. The Faro is the result of a blend of red grape varieties: Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera make up the base; in a smaller proportion (max 15%) variable quantities of Calabrese, Sangiovese, Gaglioppo and other possible native species can enter.

The alcohol content is over 12%. It is characterized by a more or less intense ruby red colour and releases delicate aromas of ripe red fruit, with spicy notes. Faro DOC can be bottled only after having aged for at least one year from the date of vinification.

It is a wine that is characterized by its balance, persistence and global harmony.

"And in winter, when you draw the wine, let there be in your heart a song for each cup; and let there be in the song a remembrance for the autumn days, and for the vineyard, and for the winepress.."

(K. Gibran)

“Vigna Sara”, in Faro Superiore, stands on a slope overlooking the Strait of Messina, at 240 meters above sea level, with southern exposure. The continuous ventilation and the sandy soil are the peculiar characteristics of the vineyard, contributing in a natural way to its development.

In 2001 Franco and Mariacarla Caruso decided, starting from the experience in the vineyard of the progenitor Giovanni and with the complicity of their children Sara and Gianandrea, to give new impetus to the vineyard, venturing into the production of a quality wine. In the house of “Vigna Sara”, among the vineyards, the Caruso family spends a long summer and autumn period every year, dedicating themselves with great passion to the care of the family vineyard.

The cultivation and processing of the produced grapes, thanks to a favourable soil and climate situation, has always given rise to a wine that is highly appreciated for its aromas and flavour, consumed by the family and shared with friends.

The vinification of Faro doc “Vigna Sara” is carried out in the cellar attached to the vineyard, exclusively from healthy grapes produced on the farm. The traditional maceration “in red” still makes use of manual fulling.

"Vigna Sara" gets the advice of oenologist and friend Vincenzo Angileri, who interprets the attention of the owners in minimizing treatments, using products of bio farming with low environmental impact.

The craftsmanship and careful monitoring of the transformations have made it possible to obtain a product that has achieved the silver medal in the 2003 international competition among great wines in small batches organized by "Le Città del Vino" and the "Office International de la Vigne et du Vin”.

Vigna Sara is part of the Consortium for the protection of D.O.C. Faro and the association “Strada del Vino della provincia di Messina”.
